Before getting to this weeks desktop, there's a couple of things I wanted to remind you about.  First, expect the next update on the 24th, right on time.  I think I've got a handle on my other sites and can stay on track with the updates here.  (:   Second, the previous weeks wallpaper is always still available by clicking the preview to the left found on this page.  Enjoy!

Above is this weeks free desktop.  Back this week to a place which has been featured several times before, Dead Horse Point State Park.  Dead Horse Point is located near Moab, Utah, and overlooks parts Canyonlands National Park which makes it possible to experience wonderful views of some pinnacles and buttes in it along with a lot of area outside both of the parks.  Now, as to how this park got its name, well legend has it that a large number of horses perished here. Around the turn of the century, local cowboys used the point as a corral for the wild mustangs and after the horses they wanted were separated from the herd, the broomtails (culls) would then be released.  Well on one occasion, either the neck to the point was not reopened for these horses to exit or it was and the horses simply didn't realize it had been, but in any case, a herd died on this waterless point, hence it's name.  Now to be fair, as with many "legends" there is some serious doubt of this actually happening, but this the story which goes along the park and its name.  Shifting to something a bit more pleasant, lets take a look at this weeks shot.  There are many great views to be had on the rim trail at Dead Horse Point, the one featured here is from Big Horn Overlook and it's really something.  We are looking toward the southwest with everything you see in the distance being in Cayonlands NP.  The main feature in this June 2006 picture is the canyon this vantage point overlooks and I'm pretty sure it's Shafer Canyon.  It might be hard to tell, but it is over 1500ft down to the canyon floor and sometimes in these very open areas, it's real easy to just lose your sense of distance.  There is one sense I never lose when out here, it being my sense of awe (at times I'm sure it will wear it out from all the use (; ).  Dead Horse Point has over 7+ miles of rim trail to walk with several overlooks offering amazing views. I can honestly say this is a very enjoyable, but small (you can see every thing here in a day) state park one really needs consider visiting. A side note here, this park has a great campground and offers one an excellent opportunity to stay here several nights while extending your exploration to Canyonlands - Island in the Sky at the same time.
