Before getting to this weeks desktop, there's a couple of things I wanted to remind you about.  First, expect the next update on 8th and the 12th update should be on time.  I had four other sites get hit by a virus and while fixing them I got side-tracked making some changes i had for them and well ....  Hopefully my hosting company (which is where I think the virus came from) has everything secure and I can stay on track on the updates here.  (:   Second, the previous weeks wallpaper is always still available by clicking the preview to the left found on this page.  Enjoy!

Above is this weeks free desktop.  Well, this is one of those truly rare occasions where I get the opportunity to introduce a place which has not been featured here previously, welcome to Acadia National Park.  Located on the rugged coast of Maine, mainly on Mount Desert Island, this was the first National Park east of the Mississippi. Acadia was formed in 1919 as Lafayette National Park and changed to its present name in 1929.  This amazing park protects over 47,000 acres of lakes, ponds, mountains, forests and shoreline along the coast.  It preserves both natural and man-made treasures, with one of the latter being a 45 mile carriage road system which was built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. close to one hundred years ago.  One of the better known natural wonders in the park, Cadillac Mountain, is the location of this weeks shot.  Rising 1530 feet, it is the highest point on the US Atlantic coast and the view from Cadillac are amazing.  Here you are looking south to the coast in this Oct 2007 photo which was taken on the loop trail that circles the top of the mountain and the big blue out there is the Atlantic Ocean.  To point out a few interesting things, the finger of land around the middle of the photo is Otter Point and just to the left of it with a bit of clearing on top is the 525 foot Gorham Mountain.  The inlet to the right of Otter Point is Otter Cove.  Looking a little more to the right of this you can make out some buildings with a couple of white one really jumping out, this is the town of Otter Creek.  Now between this town and the ocean is Blackwoods Campground which is where we camped the two nights here and is a truly nice site if camping is your thing (I like to (; ).  As you can tell, we missed the good Fall colors here by a couple of weeks, but still, one can gauge just how beautiful it can be here in the Fall.  If you would prefer not overwork your mind, the photo up on the NPS for Acadia is a nice Fall shot taken from Gorham Mountain across Otter Cove with Otter Creek and the wooded Blackwood clearly visible (yes, I had a reason for me pointing out Gorham, so that photo could be gauged in this one (:).  Acadia has a lot to offer visitors: over a hundred miles of hiking trail, 45 miles of carriage roads for hiking and biking, horseback riding, carriage rides, or if you seek a little relaxation, try just sitting on the beach (it's small but still nice).  This truly is a beautiful park, one you will enjoy experiencing.
