Before getting to this weeks desktop, there's a couple of things I wanted to remind you about.  First, the updates are shifted a few days the next couple of weeks and will be back on track soon.  Second, the previous weeks wallpaper is always still available by clicking the preview to the left found on this page. Enjoy!

Above is this weeks free desktop.  Back this week to a place which has been featured several times before, Dead Horse Point State Park.  Dead Horse Point, near Moab, Utah, overlooks Canyonlands National Park which makes it possible to experience wonderful views of some pinnacles and buttes in Canyonlands NP, Island in the Sky section along with a lot of area outside both of the parks.  Now, as this parks name seems to imply, a large number of horses perished here. Around the turn of the century, local cowboys used the point as a corral for the wild mustangs and after the horses they wanted were separated from the herd, the broomtails (culls) would then be released.  Well on one occasion, either the neck to the point was not reopened for these horses to exit or it was and the horses simply didn't realize it had been, but in any case, a herd died on this waterless point, hence it's name.  Okay, to be fair, as with many "legends" there is some serious doubt of this actually happening, but this the story which goes along the park. Now to shift to something a bit more pleasant, lets take a look at this weeks shot.  The view from the Dead Horse Point Overlook is really something. Looking east off the point you will be presented with the view offered here.  The main feature in this May 2007 picture is the coloring on the formations as the sun sets. It's said that in the time it takes for you to turn your head, you can miss an opportunity, well this evening was one of those times.  The color started to fire as the sun was setting, I took 3-4 shots, I then moved 20 feet down the wall for a bit different angle (20 seconds max) and the color was gone as the sun when behind a cloud never to appear again that night.  One might think I would be disappointed with the evening, but it was a great minute or so of color and I had a wonderful conversation with a couple of other guys who were there for the sunset.  When one door closes, another one opens. (;  There are 7+ miles of rim trail to walk with several overlooks, some have some great views of the surrounding canyons.  Honestly, I found Dead Horse Point to be very enjoyable, small (you can see every thing here in a day), but a great place to camp and visit Canyonlands - Island in the Sky at the same time.
