Above is this weeks free desktop. This week marks the fourth and final of four reruns, this time we return to a place featured in several recent TV commercials, Dead Horse Point State Park. Dead Horse Point, near Moab, Utah, overlooks Canyonlands National Park which makes it possible to experience wonderful views of some pinnacles and buttes in Canyonlands National Park along with a lot of area outside the boundaries of both parks. Now, there's several different stories concerning how this section of land became known as Dead Horse Point, with the most popular going something like this. A long time ago, local cowboys used the point as a natural corral for the wild mustangs. After the horses they wanted were separated from the herd, the broomtails (culls) would then be released. Well on one occasion, either the neck to the point was not reoponed for these horses to exit or it was and the horses simply didn't realize it had been, but in any case, a large herd died on this waterless point, hence it's name. Okay, to be fair, as with "legends", there is some serious doubt of this actually happening here, but it does explain the name. On to this weeks shot. The view from the Dead Horse Point Overlook is really something. The photo this week is shortly before sunset at the main overlook looking southeast. The dimming light did bring out some of the highlights in the rocks, it was just a bit less than I was hoping for. Viewing the sunset here seems to be a very popular as there were 50+ people with me enjoying this event. Dead Horse Point offers more than 4 miles of trails which run around the rim of the point and these include several overlooks for great views of surrounding canyons. I can honestly say it is well worth a visit if you do nothing more here than experience the main overlook, but there's much more here if you want to experience it.
