Above is this weeks free desktop. Back once again to a place which has been featured here many, many times, Arches National Park. Arches is just outside Moab, UT and showcases amazing erosion sculptured rock with the main formations being its namesake, arches. The "how an arch is formed" section was dropped some time back, but I'm bringing back a condensed version this time just for the sake of those interested in knowing. How does an arch form? Well, take a free standing sandstone fin like the ones found here, add erosive actions (these mainly being frost, wind and seeping moisture), give it few million years and poof, you get this amazing wonder. Nothing to it really! (; Like the most recent offering from Arches, this weeks photo is not from the most popular section of this park, Devils Garden (a meca for arches), rather, I wish to showcase some of the amazing scenery which abounds in Arches. It is easy to forget there is more to this park than arches, but I assure you, it is apparent once you're here. This weeks photo from June 2005 was taken at the Petrified Dunes Viewpoint looking SE across the dune field. In the distance, thos are the La Sal Mountains still sporting a fair amount of snow. Numerous trails of varying lengths and difficulties take you right to some truly beautiful arches and other formations. They lead you through (and on) the sandstone fins and other rocks formations, and allow you the opportunity to experience this park the way you need to see it, close up. This is really an intriguing, beautiful and very entertaining park that contains more sights than can be explored in a single day. (:
