Above is this weeks free desktop. Once again back to a wonderful park not far from Moab, UT, Canyonlands National Park. Two important forces, gravity plus the Colorado River and Green River, helped form this wonderful park. From their actions in the past and their present exsistance, the two rivers actually divide Canyonlands into three sections - the Maze, the Needles and the Island in the Sky. Each of these sections offers a different experience and each is well worth making a visit. The Maze is virtually undeveloped which offers you a true (and very real) wildness opportunity, the Needles takes down into canyons for a close-up adventure, while the Island in the Sky section lives up to its name as you find yourself elevated around 2000 ft above the Colorado and Green Rivers along with the other two sections of the park. The amazing perspective this section provides numerous overlooks that rewards visitors with magnificent views, plus there are plenty of trails to hike, both staying up on the rim and venturing down into numerous canyons. This weeks picture was taken in June 2005 at the Grand View Point Overlook. This is looking SE off the overlook across Monument Basin and the White Rim. Now, in an effort to give you some perspective here, the lip of the White Rim and that 4x4 road is about 1.25 miles away. Go up and left to see a rathher deep cut canyon, this is the Colorado River, around 3miles away. Continue up and on the left edge, center, one can just make out the Needles Overlook around 9 miles away (the park boundary ends about halfway between here and there). If you wanted to compare the views from Grand View and Needles overlooks, be prepared for a bit of a trip as it's close to three hours and 100 driving miles away. (; With an absolutely massive trail system, numberous 4x4 only roads, and two untamed rivers, Canyonlands National Park can offer a very real wilderness experience for those who want it, or if you're looking for something much more tame, that's available too (plus any level in between). No matter what level you choose, you're sure to find a truly rewarding and entertaining visit here.
