Above is this weeks free desktop. From southern Utah, back to a park you've seen featured here several times before, Bryce Canyon National Park. For those unfamiliar with Bryce Canyon, the main feature of the park is erosion shaped pillars of colorful limestones, sandstones, and mudstones called hoodoos. The views you're able to get from its many easily accessible overlooks are simply magnificent. It is possible on clear days to see over 100 miles from some points which rewards a visitor with staggering, expansive views of the surrounding mountains and plateaus. The picture featured this week was taken June 2005 at Rainbow Point looking basically north. At 9100 ft, this point affords expansive views of the southern Utah landscape and from it's sister southern facing point, Yovimpa Point, it's possible to catch a glimse of Arizona and on the clearest days, New Mexico. Now one will find some 50 miles of excellent hiking trails which take you into the heart of the park, enabling a close up experience well worth the any pain you might suffer tackling the terrain, but a word of warning before heading out, because of the elevation (7000 to 9000ft) and the fact that most trails end with you coming back up, out of a canyon (not the easiest thing for one not use to the elevation, I speak from personal experience here (; ) most of these would have to be considered a bit tough. That said, go have some fun! Bryce Canyon is a park which can offer offer opportunitied for many days exploring, or if time is short, you can still have rewarding experience in just a single, wonderful day.
