Above is this weeks free desktop. This week we travel back to a wonderful park not far from Moab, UT, Canyonlands National Park. Two important forces, the Colorado River and Green River, helped form this park while actually dividing Canyonlands into three sections - the Maze, the Needles and the Island in the Sky. Each of these offers a different experience, the Maze is virtually undeveloped which gives a true (and very real) wildness opportunity, the Needles takes down into the canyons for a close-up adventure, while the Island in the Sky section lives up to its name as you find yourself elevated around 2000 ft above the Colorado and Green Rivers along with the other sections of the park. The amazing perspective of this section provides numerous overlooks that offer magnificent views, plus there are plenty of trails to hike, both staying up on the rim and venturing down into numerous canyons. This picture was taken in June 2005 near the end of the trail to the White Rim Trail Overlook. This is looking east with that large canyon taking up most of the left side of the picture being Gooseberry Canyon. With a massive trail system, 4x4 only roads, and untamed rivers, Canyonlands National Park can offer a very real wilderness experience for those who want it, or if you're looking for something much more tame, that's available too (plus anything in between). No matter what level you choose, you will find a truly rewarding and entertaining visit here.
