Above is this weeks free desktop. Back again to a truly amazing park featured many times, this is from Zion National Park in southwest Utah. This park was established in 1909 and features amazing scenery including sandstone cliffs among the highest in the world. The park itself is basicly comprised of three sections, both by the need to access the park from three separate routes and by what you will see in each area. The upper section is Kolob Canyon, a beautiful area which is very lightly developed and offers some very intriguing day hike and backcountry possibilities. The central section is the Upper and Lower Kolob Plateau which is the least developed of the three and very easy to overlook as it requires a bit of searching just to find access (this section offers some great views and contains trailheads to backcountry exploration). Lastly, Zion Canyon is the main, highly developed section and is where most people go when visiting the park (for good reason too, it's really beautiful here). Because of the volume of visitors, main portion of Zion Canyon is accessed through a shuttle service, and I actually found this to be a real plus as it was kind of nice just enjoying the ride through the park. Now, this weeks picture is not from the main section, but rather from Kolob Canyon. Taken on the trail near the end of our 14.4 mile round trip day hike to Kolob Arch, this showcases one of the many beautiful formations we encountered on the 14.4 mile round trip day hike. This treasure of America's park system has so much to experience, plan a multi-day visit or you'll just get a glimpse of what Zion has to offer.
