Before getting to this weeks desktop, there's a couple of things I wanted to remind you about. First, updates are off and I am not going to try to shift them back on time but rather just let them play out as they are (the one slated for the 13th will be up on the 20th, the one for the 20th appears on the 27th). Second, the previous weeks wallpaper is always still available by clicking the preview to the left found on this page. Enjoy!
Above is this weeks free desktop. Back this week to a park which has been featured several times before, Dead Horse Point State Park. Dead Horse Point is located near Moab, Utah and overlooks another great park, Canyonlands National Park, making it possible to experience wonderful views of some pinnacles and buttes in Canyonlands NP, Island in the Sky section along with a lot of area outside both of the parks. Now, as this parks name seems to imply, a large number of horses perished here. Around the turn of the century, local cowboys used the point as a corral for the wild mustangs and after the horses they wanted were separated from the herd, the broomtails (culls) would then be released. Well on one occasion, either the neck to the point was not reoponed for these horses to exit or it was and the horses simply didn't realize it had been, but in any case, a herd died on this waterless point, hence it's name. Whether this actually happened is up for debate, but this the story which goes along the park. Now to lighten the mood a bit by taking a look at this weeks shot. This June 2007 photo here is not exactly from the Dead Horse Point Overlook which offers expansive veiws of the area, but rather from the rim trail about 1/2 mile west of the overlook. One of the main features offered at the overlook is still highlighted here, the 180 degree crook of the Colorado River, and if you look close, it's possible to follow it a ways on it travels to the south. There are 7+ miles of rim trail to walk with several overlooks, some have some great views of the surrounding canyons. Honestly, I found Dead Horse Point to be very enjoyable, small (you can see every thing here in a day), but a great place to camp and visit Canyonlands - Island in the Sky at the same time. Check the links section for more info on Dead Horse Point State Park.
