Before getting to this weeks desktop, there's a couple of things I wanted to remind you about.
First, expect the next update to be on time. Second, the previous weeks wallpaper is always still available by clicking the preview to the left found on this page. Enjoy!
Above is this weeks free desktop. This time we're returning for our second vist to this truly wonderful place, welcome to Acadia National Park. Located on the rugged coast of Maine, mainly on Mount Desert Island, this was the first National Park east of the Mississippi. Acadia was formed in 1919 as Lafayette National Park and changed to its present name in 1929. This amazing park protects over 47,000 acres of lakes, ponds, mountains, forests and shoreline along the coast. It preserves both natural and man-made treasures, with one of the latter being a 45 mile carriage road system which was built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. close to one hundred years ago. One of the better known man-made wonders in the park is the location of this weeks shot, the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. Located on the southwestern tip of Mount Desert Island, the Bass Harbor Head Light was built in 1858 and stands 32 feet high (it's 56 feet above the water). One can view the lighthouse up close (but it isn't open to the public), or take a short trail and end up where this October 2007 photo was snapped. There is a rather large area of rocky coast to explore here and it offers many opportunities for the exploration of the rugged nature of the Maine coast, observe the wonder of the Atlantic Ocean, or just lay back and enjoy the day. Acadia has a lot to offer visitors: over a hundred miles of hiking trail, 45 miles of carriage roads for hiking and biking, horseback riding, carriage rides, or if you seek a little relaxation, try just sitting on the beach (it's small but still nice). This truly is a beautiful park, one I want to return to and I know you will enjoy experiencing. Check the links section for more info on Acadia National Park.
