Above is this weeks free desktop. Back once again to an amazing park featured many times (just a couple of weeks ago in fact), this is Zion National Park in southwest Utah. Zion NP was established in 1909 and features amazing scenery including breathtaking sandstone cliffs among the highest in the world. The park itself is basically divided into three sections, not just by the variations in what you will see in each, but also by the need to access the park from three different routes. The upper section is Kolob Canyon, a beautiful area which is very lightly developed and offers some very intriguing day hike and backcountry possibilities. The central section is the Upper and Lower Kolob Plateau which is the least developed of the three and very easy to overlook as it requires a bit of searching just to find access to it (this section offers some great views and contains trailheads to backcountry exploration). Lastly, Zion Canyon is the main, highly developed section and it is where the majority of visitors go when experiencing this park (and for good reason too, it's really beautiful here). Because of the volume of visitors, main portion of Zion Canyon is accessed only through a shuttle service, which I found to be a quite enjoyable as it freed me up from the task of driving in this section of the park. Now, this weeks picture is not from the Zion Canyon, but rather from a trail in the Kolob Canyon section. This shot was taken at about the 12 mile mark of our 14.4 mile round trip day hike to Kolob Arch, and highlights one of the interesting formations we encountered on the day hike. Zion is a real treasure of America's park system and it has so much to experience, you'll just get a glimpse of what it has to offer unless you plan a multi-day visit here.
