Above is this weeks free desktop. From a wonder filled park featured here many times, this is from Zion National Park. Located in southwest Utah, this park was established in 1909 and features amazing scenery including sandstone cliffs among the highest in the world. The park itself basicly breaks down into three sections, both by the need to access the park from three different routes and by what you will see in each area. The upper section is Kolob Canyon, a truly beautiful area which is very lightly developed and offers some very intriguing day hike and backcountry possibilities. The central section is the Upper and Lower Kolob Plateau which is the least developed of the three and very easy to overlook as it requires a bit of searching just to find (this section offers some great views and contains trailheads to backcountry exploration). Lastly, Zion Canyon is the main, highly developed section and is where most people go when visiting the park (for good reason too, it's really beautiful here). Because of the volume of visitors to Zion, the main portion of Zion Canyon is accessed through a shuttle service. As one not used to being in a position of riding through parks, this was a quite enjoyable experience using a shuttle, as my focus could be devoted to the scenery instead of driving. This weeks picture is from the main section, Zion Canyon. Walking the loop trail to the Emerald Pools you take a footbridge over the North Fork of the Virgin River (actually, you cross it twice, as it is in a small section you travel both in and out). This shot is from the footbridge on our way out, in late afternoon looking north. This mild looking river, with millions of years in its pocket, is the main force in the carving of this canyon. This treasure of America's park system has much to experience and well worth planning several days here.
