Above is this weeks free desktop. Back once again to a really interesting and little known park, Goblin Valley State Park. As I'm sure many of you out there are now asking "Goblin Valley?", let me just give you a quick run down on this gem. This small, secluded park in south central Utah encompasses just over 3000 acres of the Great Basin Desert, but as is so often the case, it's not the size, but rather the content that counts. The treasure of Goblin Valley is actually contained in the parks name, Goblin Valley, a valley where thousands of "goblins" or "stone babies" stand. These intriguing mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles were formed from wind and water erosion and are mainly found in a one mile wide, two miles long main section. The area has a weird look to it, almost alien, which I'm sure is why it was used as the alien planet for the 1999 film "Galaxy Quest". Now, with all the talk about the goblins, the shot this week actually doesn't include them, but is rather of some of what surrounds Goblin Valley. In the photo, the light colored rock in the distance is the remains of a sawtooth ridge of upturned sandstone known as the San Rafael Reef (yes, Capitol Reef got its name for the same reason). Now, if you look past the forked formation in the foreground, go just a bit right, beyond the reef is Temple Mountain. This was taken in May 2004, looking north from the parking area. There are several marked hiking trails here, plus exploring the entire valley and surrounding area seemed to be okay. Goblin Valley State Park is great place to spend a day exploring the "goblins" and walking the trails, or if time is short, it can still be a rewarding experience if you just have a couple of hours for a visit.
